How we calculate our numbers

Most of what you see on GioScore is match data as it comes from each competition: results, lineups, minutes, goals, cards and standings. On top of that, some blocks are marked computed. Those are figures we work out ourselves from the same match data, and this page explains how. We use the same rules on every page, so we explain them once here instead of repeating them under every table.

Computed figures are rebuilt from our database whenever a page is generated, so they move as new results come in. When there isn't enough data to say something reliably, we leave the block out rather than show a partial or misleading number. For where the data comes from and how to report a mistake, see our editorial policy.

Players

  • League seasons. The season-by-season league table only counts domestic league competitions. National-team games, continental competitions (Champions League, Libertadores…) and cups are left out, so the numbers compare like with like. Each competition is classified by its own league record, not by its name. If we can't classify at least half of a player's seasons, we don't publish the table.
  • Per-90 figures.Goals plus assists per 90 minutes (G+A/90), and goals conceded per 90 for goalkeepers, use the minutes the player actually played. Seasons where minutes weren't recorded show a dash and don't count towards the rate, instead of being treated as zero.
  • Missing data is not zero. When a competition doesn't record assists, or a goalkeeping season was left empty, we show a dash and leave it out of totals and averages.
  • Rating trend. The average rating of the player's last two rated league seasons compared with the average of all rated seasons before them. A season needs at least 5 appearances to count, and the trend is only shown with at least 4 rated seasons. Season ratings are the match ratings supplied with the official match data; we don't apply our own rating model.
  • Career involvement. Goals and assists added up across every league season on record, so it matches the season table. The per-90 rate uses only the minutes on record.
  • Among position peers. Percentiles compare the player with every player in the same league, season and position group who played at least 450 minutes. We rank that full group ourselves; the numbers are not taken from any external ranking. The group size is shown next to the figures.

Matches

  • Streaks and recent form.Worked out from each team's finished games before kickoff, across all competitions. The Games column shows how many matches are behind each row.
  • Head-to-head.Every finished meeting between the two clubs in our results database. If the same match was recorded twice, it only counts once. "Period covered" runs from the first to the most recent meeting.
  • Standings context."Form rank" is where a team would sit in the league if you only counted points from its last 5 league games. "Form vs pos" is the table position minus the form rank: a positive number means the team is playing better than its position suggests. Before kickoff we use the table as it stood before the match; after full time, the current table.
  • Goals per game. Goals scored and conceded per game for each side, next to the league average (all goals divided by all games played in that table). Shown once at least 6 teams have played.
  • What is at stake. Where each team would be with a win (3 points), assuming every other result stays the same.

Teams

  • Form and season rates.Points per game, clean sheets, games without scoring and games where both teams scored are counted over the team's finished games in the season shown. The form curve uses the last 10 games; it says "league games" only when the season is a domestic league for a club.
  • Home and away. The same figures split by venue, taken from results rather than from a summary feed.
  • Goal dependence. Shares are worked out over goals credited to individual players this season. Own goals are left out, because no player of the team scored them.
  • League table context. Goals scored and conceded per game are compared with the league average and ranked against every team in the same table.

Coaches

  • Points per match. Every match on record for the manager, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat. The win–draw–loss record is shown next to it.
  • Best spell. The club where the manager earned the most points per match, among spells of at least 10 matches (if there are none, all spells are considered). The longest spell is the one with the most matches in charge.
  • Clubs managed. Clubs with at least one match on record, and the years those matches cover.

Competitions

  • Goals per match. Worked out from the standings shown on the page. Each match appears twice in a league table (once for each team), so we halve the games played to get the number of matches. Nothing is shown until at least 4 teams and 4 matches are in the table.
  • Best attack and best defence. The teams with the most goals scored and the fewest conceded per game played, so teams with a game in hand aren't penalised.
  • Leader's margin. The points gap between first and second place in the table.
